Brodwyn Fischer, Teaching Professorship Recipient***

A specialist in the history of Brazil, Associate Professor Brodwyn Fischer, has compiled a brilliant record as a scholar and teacher and colleague at Northwestern University since joining its faculty in 2001. She serves as Director of Undergraduate Studies in the History Department, presiding over noteworthy reforms in course offerings and major requirements, the introduction of monthly student-faculty lunches and a review of grading standards.

Brodie is a summa cum laude history graduate of Harvard-Radcliffe in 1991, with an A.M, in 1993 and a Ph.D in History in 1999, both from Harvard University. In 2002, she received the Harvard University Gross Prize for best History Dissertation.

Among other publications, she is the author of "A Poverty of Rights: Citizenship and Inequality in 20th Century Rio de Janeiro," for which she has received three academic prizes.

***NOTE: Dr. Fischer left Northwestern University at the end of the academic year 2012-13, which was the first year of the three year Professorship. The Alumnae of Northwestern University Teaching Professorship was vacant for 2013-14, and another professor was chosen for a three year award in 2014.
