The Alumnae Award recognizes a woman who has brought honor to Northwestern University through outstanding professional contributions in her field and who has attained national recognition. Established in 1976, the Alumnae Award has been presented every year to an alumna who has had a significant impact in her field of endeavor. Educators, journalists, doctors, scientists, and artists are included among The Alumnae’s roster of awardees.

Geneva Overholser just accepted an appointment as Senior Fellow with the Democracy Fund, working on how to enrich informed participation in our democracy.  She is currently a senior fellow at the Center for Communication Leadership and Policy at the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.  She was until July 2013 director of the USC Annenberg School of Journalism, and is now an independent journalist in New York City.  She currently serves on the boards of several groups and has been an ombudsman of The Washington Post, a member of the editorial board of The New York Times, a syndicated columnist for The Washington Post Writers Group, and a reporter for the Colorado Sun Springs.  She also spent five years overseas, working and writing in Paris and Kinshasa.
