The Alumnae Award recognizes a woman who has brought honor to Northwestern University through outstanding professional contributions in her field and who has attained national recognition. Established in 1976, the Alumnae Award has been presented every year to an alumna who has had a significant impact in her field of endeavor. Educators, journalists, doctors, scientists, and artists are included among The Alumnae’s roster of awardees.
 
Marthy Lavey has been an ensemble member of Steppenwolf Theater Company since 1993 and artistic director since 1995.  She has overseen the production of hundreds of plays and transferred dozens of Steppenwolf productions to Broadway and abroad.  Martha Lavey holds a doctorate in Performance Studies from Northwestern University and is a member of the National Advisory Council for the School of Communications at Northwestern University.  She is a recipient of the Sarah Siddons Award, and Alumni Merit Award and an Honorary Doctorate from Northwestern University.
