Kristin Palarz, WCAS ’14, Integrated Science Program*, minor Spanish

Kristin's goal is to pursue a degree to help others either through medical research or by providing medical services to regions where they are unavailable. This summer she is participating in Northwestern’s International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition (iGEM). Kristin tells that “ iGEM is a competition with over 120 teams from more than 20 countries. The project generally combines biology and engineering to develop a biological machine that can perform a desired function.” NU’s team has six undergraduate students. *From NU’s website:…highly selective curriculum of nature sciences and mathematics presented in small classes at an accelerated pace…”

Elizabeth Claire Mosier, McC '13, Biomedical Engineering

Elizabeth Claire's success in the Engineering Analysis classes gave her a good start towards her academic goal--to complete the BS/MS program in Biomedical Engineering. Her plan is use this award as an opportunity to do meaningful research. She is also participating in a campus activity Design for AmericaTM , please see a description* below, and she volunteers as a mentor in a program for middle school through high school students run by The Society for Women Engineers.

Allegra Mayer, WCAS '13, Integrated Science Program*

Allegra is one of three women remaining in her class in the rigorous Integrated Science Program. Before coming to Northwestern, as a German student, she received an award of a trip to Germany. She returned with a new interest in alternative approaches to the use of resources and plans to use the interdisciplinary program to prepare the groundwork for future research in this area. Her efforts are not limited to the classroom. She is a student-athlete on the varsity women’s cross country team and was a volunteer with the Cherokee Nation as a participant in “Alternative Student Breaks” this spring.

Eight Northwestern Students Granted 2022-2023 STEM Scholarships By The Alumnae of Northwestern University

EVANSTON, Ill. --- The Alumnae of Northwestern University has selected eight students to receive 2022-2023 Alumnae STEM scholarships, which are awarded to students who excel in a STEM major (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). Criteria for selection include academic excellence, honors achieved, and financial need.

Lili Pope, STEM Scholar

Lili Pope (WCAS), from Belfast, Maine, is a biological science and global health major with a minor in psychology. She serves as a lab aide at the Chemistry of Life Processes Institute and is a research assistant in Renee Engeln’s Body and Media lab, becoming its manager next fall. Her interest lies in the intersection of physical health and mental health. Her goal is to receive a master’s degree in public health and then to earn a medical degree. She plays the cello and serves as a summer camp counselor.

Katelynn Nguyen, STEM Scholar

Katelynn Nguyen, McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science (McC), is from Hoffman Estates, Ill., majoring in biomedical engineering. Her goal is to make healthcare affordable and accessible to everyone by improving the price and effectiveness of medical and bioelectronic devices. At Northwestern, Katelynn has been recognized by McCormick for her academic performance in both her freshman and sophomore years. She was also awarded a research fellowship at the Rogers Lab last summer, which led to a work-study job during the academic year. Katelynn is the proud owner of a black belt in karate, after a decade of training

Mariya Nemesh, STEM Scholar

Mariya Nemesh, WCAS, from Brookfield, Ill., is studying neuroscience and communication. Her plans are to complete a 4-year program in physical therapy. Currently, she is doing an independent project in Dr. Eva Redei’s lab at the Feinberg School of Medicine. Her focus is on stress-induced decline in learning and memory. In high school she was awarded Research Scholar of the Year. At Northwestern, she has been named an Arch Scholar, and also serves as the vice president of events in the Northwestern Women’s Network organization.

Hassan Mohammad, STEM Scholar

Hassan Mohammad, WCAS, from Skokie, Ill., is on a pre-med track to study the influence that the brain and the mind have on each other. His interest in neuropsychology has led him to research the symptoms and causes of psychosis, movement disorders and depression. Hassan was the valedictorian of his high school class. At Northwestern, he received the Department Excellence Award for Undergraduate Studies and was selected as a Singer Family Scholar.

Miriam Hansen-Erraziqi, STEM Scholar

Miriam (Mimi) Hansen-Erraziqi, WCAS, from Lenexa, KS, is majoring in environmental sciences; her focus in the field is on wildlife conservation and indigenous land rights. Her goal is to become involved in international environmental law and policy. In addition to being on the Dean’s List, Miriam also serves as a research assistant to Dr. Katherine Hoffman in the field of anthropology. Miriam has a cochlear implant that helps her with communications, but mostly she lipreads and learns from visual context.

Emilya Ershtein, STEM Scholar

Emilya Ershtein, WCAS, from Atlanta, GA, is pursuing a double major in economics and mathematical methods in social science. Her interest in social issues has led her to plan on entering a PhD program with the goal of pursuing a career as a social scientist. In high school, Emilya received a Lockheed Martin STEM scholarship. At Northwestern, she received the Northwestern Mathematics Award for Excellence. She is also recipient of the Golden Citizen Fellowship, having lived in India during her 2019-2020 gap year.
